LANE OF POPLARS AT SUNSET

Lane of Poplars at Sunset is an early work of Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. He painted the oil on canvas in 1884.

Van Gogh had an interest in landscapes from early on and continued to paint them throughout his life. Note the use of dark colours in Lane of Poplars at Sunset that was typical of the early works of Vincent. Later in life after prompting from his brother Theo, Vincent started using brighter colours.

A blazing sun sets setting in the back middle of the painting. A lonely woman walking the path gives us a sense of loneliness. One gets the feeling she is walking a road of no end.
