Pieta by Vincent Van Gogh was painted by the Dutch artist in 1889.
The Pieta is a subject in Christian art that depicts the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus.
During his life Vincent did a number of paintings based on the works of other artits that he admired.
So is the case here with Pieta (after Delacroix).
Notice the strong use of blues and yellows in Pieta by Van Gogh.
Yet Van Gogh uses a red for Christ`s hair, which makes it stand out.
It is interesting that Van Gogh who had a strong religious belief only ever painted one image of Christ during his life.
Vincent wrote to his brother Theo on September 19 where he talked about the Pieta he had just painted.
