The painting is actually a version of Gustave Doré's print of life in prison.
Vincent did the painting while he was in the asylum in Saint-Rémy.
Possibly the asylum felt much like a prison to him.
He was restricted there in what he could paint.
Vincent had a strong feeling for those that suffered.
Van Gogh may have used Prisoner's Exercising to express his own feelings of confinement and hopelessness.
He captures the emotions of the prisoners.
An endless circle while guards look on in almost depression.
The confinment of the walls and the drab palette offer no hope.
