The Asylum Garden at Arles was painted in 1889 by Dutch artis Vincent van Gogh.
Vincent experienced many emotional and mental problems in his life.
Van Gogh eventually committed suicide in 1890.
By 1889, his emotional state was worsening.
He eventually admitted himself into an asylum.
Van Gogh did a number of paintings of the Asylum and its surroundings.
The Asylum Garden at Arles is these days a hotel and the gardens that Van Gogh painted have been preserved.
Vincent has used a large array on his palette for The Asylum Garden at Arles.
Note the two large trees to the front of the painting and how prominent they are.
Possibly they appeared like some sort of guards of the asylum to Vincent.
A pond sits in the middle surrounded by lovely gardens.
The bright colours and the positive feel to the painting gives us the impression Vincent must have been in a happier mood when he painted The Asylum Garden at Arles.
