THE CHURCH AT AUVERS

The Church at Auvers is an oil on canvas that was painted by Vincent van Gogh during the last weeks of his life in 1890.

It is interesting how Vincent portrays the front area of The Church at Auvers painting as covered in sunlight, but the church takes on the appearance of sitting within its own shadow. The deep blue sky shows us the play of colour Vincent has used in this painting.

The Church does not show us a happy place, but more a place of gloom. The Church itself was constructed during the 13th century. It is built in the early gothic style of the times.
