The Window at Bataille's

The Window at Bataille's is an oil on canvas painting done in 1887 in Paris by artist Vincent van Gogh.

Vincent did a number of window paintings in his life. It was 1887 and Vincent was living in Paris at his brother Theo's apartment on the Rue de Laval. Here he painted the window of Madame Bataille's small restaurant. Vincent would sometimes eat his meals at Madame Bataille's.

There is a curtain on the window and next to the window on a hanger is a hat and coat. Across the road two men are standing for a chat. Van Gogh was still using the softer darker palette at this time, unlike the stronger brighter colours later in his post-impressionist era.
