THE YELLOW HOUSE

The Yellow House is an oil on canvas that was painted by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in September 1888. Originally Vincent titled the painting, "The House and its environment" (French: La Maison et son entourage). But Van Gogh later titled it, The Street (French: La Rue).

The painting is of the building at Place Lamartine, Arles, France. Vincent had rented four rooms at the house.

Friend and artist Paul Gauguin stayed in the house with Vincent from late October, 1888, for nine weeks. After completing the painting, Vincent sent a sketch of the painting to his brother Theo. During World War Two, The Yellow House was actually bombed, but has since been rebuilt.
