WHEAT FIELD WITH CROWS

Wheat Field with Crows by Vincent van Gogh was painted in July 1890. The painting is an oil on canvas that is 20x40-1/2 inches. It is often mistakenly believed to be was Van Gogh's last painting. Vincent probably did several more paintings after Wheat Field with Crows.

Wheat Field with Crows may give us look at the troubled mind of Vincent Van Gogh. Vincent committed suicide the same month he painted Wheat Field with Crows.

At first look, the painting is striking for its dramatic writhing brush strokes. The black crows flying low overhead may be signs of impending trouble or even death. Are the crows flying toward or away in the painting is hard to say. It is thought that Vincent took a walk in the fields on the evening of July 27, 1890, and shot himself with a revolver. He then made his way back home before he died with his brother Theo by his side.

Wheat Field with Crows is a turbulent painting. It shows loneliness and despair. Others however feel the painting may be positive. Either way, it evokes much debate.
